The Reserve was dedicated as a nature conservation and plantation reserve in 1991. A heritage agreement permanently protects the Reserve which is significant for its valuable remnant native vegetation

- To protect and manage the Nurragi Conservation Reserve, the former Milang to Sandergrove Railway
- Access to seed collection
- Protection of indigenous vegetation and revegetation of cleared or damaged sites
- Focus on control and eradication of animal and plant pests - eg: rabbits, bridal creeper
- Provision of walking trail and interpretive signage
- Expansion of conservation zone through incorporation and revegetation of adjoining undeveloped road reserves
