LGBTIQA+ What does that mean? An update for 2020

LGBTIQA+ is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, asexual, ally, pansexual. This article outlines services that support the LGBTIQA+ community in South Australia (Updated for 2020)

South Australian Government Information
In support of LGBTIQ inclusion, the has established:

 - Join the network and keep in touch with LGBTIQ information and news. The email network distributes information about community events, grant funding programs, research and consultation. 

 - includes a list of services providing information, rights and advocacy, health and wellbeing and social and cultural groups. There are also specific services for youth and young people and for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.


- The allows couples (regardless of sex, gender identity or intersex status) to register their relationship with Consumer and Business Services (CBS) to have their status legally recognised.
-  Same-sex marriage is legal in Australia, the right to marry is not determined by sex or gender identity.   
 

Community Service Organisations
There are a number of community service organisations that provide support services to the LGBTIQA+ community in Adelaide and across South Australia.

- a community calendar managed by the Bfriend team of events and activities of interest to the LGBTIQA+ communities in Adelaide and across SA.

Annual Events
Pride March - Annual march through Adelaide streets in November to celebrate Adelaide’s LGBTIQ+ community followed by a Pride party

 - Annual LBTIQ Festival held in November celebrating LBTIQ+ community art and culture in Adelaide

Support and counselling
Uniting Communities - Bfriend - SA-based counselling and peer support services for people newly identifying as LGBTIQA+ or questioning their sexuality or gender. The service runs groups, provides information and resources, and connects with local community groups and events 

Parents Supporting Parents & Friends of Lesbians & Gays SA (PSPFLAG) - a South Australian Support group for Parents and their children who are gay, lesbian or bisexual

Health and relationships
SHINE SA - Sexual & Gender Diversity - gender wellbeing service and peer support program for people who are trans and gender diverse and gender questioning
 
SHINE SA - Sexual health education including , early intervention, health promotion, clinical services, assessment, therapeutic counselling 

SAMESH - support, education, training and advocacy of sexual health and HIV for men who have sex with men and people living with HIV, includes peer support, and information on sexual health and wellbeing

LGBTIQ+ Service Directories
Rainbow Directory - information and resource lists of services, organisations, groups and activities that are for, or inclusive of LGBTIQA+ communities. Managed by the Catalyst Foundation

Trans Health SA - Information and resource lists for gender diverse community in South Australia. Includes practitioners with training and experience in working with the gender diverse community, as well as social groups for trans specific and LGBTI community. 
    

Social and cultural groups
The Queer Society - University-based social and advocacy group for people of diverse genders, sexes and sexualities
 

Pride of the South - Family-friendly monthly LGBTIQ community events in the Onkaparinga area
 

Carrousel Club of SA Inc. - transgender and gender diverse social/support group 

Catalyst Foundation - LGBTIQA+ Over 50’s - information on social activities, events and monthly meet-ups, and aged and home support services
